Spaceship 2013, New Factory, TampereTampere was selected as one of the cities which NASA approved to host International Space Apps Challenge 20.-21. Apr 2013. Our main event has been named to Spaceship and initial information about the event can be found from http://spaceship.fi. Spaceship event is not just about hacking, but it contains two parallel tracks: Space Apps Challenge and Start It Up 48!

International Space Apps Challenge

International Space Apps ChallengeThe International Space Apps Challenge is a 2 day technology development event during which citizens from around the world will work together to solve current challenges relevant to both space exploration and social need. The International Space Apps Challenge will take place on all seven continents – and in space .Dozens of locations around the world will participate, including the International Space Station.

The International Space Apps Challenge is a “codeathon-style” event. Codeathons are technology development marathons, drawing on the talents and initiative of the best and the brightest software developers, engineers, designers and technologists from around the world, who volunteer their time to respond to real-world problems with solutions than can have immediate impact.

Start It Up 48!

Spaceship - Space Apps Challenge Tampere & Start It Up! 2013 - April 20.-21., New Factory, Tampere, Finland“Start IT Up” is a 48 hour event where developers, designers, marketers, astronauts, product managers and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startups!

Based on your ideas and concepts you will form teams. Team formation begins virtually starting from February on our website. The top ten teams will be selected by the organizers by the end of March and will be accepted for the actual Start It Up Challenge.

Event location

Event location has been decided. Our initial plan was to take Spaceship event to Baltic Sea, but that was impossible due to two reasons. Firstly, all boats were already fully booked. Secondly, the network capacities of current boats is too low to host hackathon. But we did not give up on the idea and we have booked the latest boat, Grace, from Viking Line for next (2014) event. Nevertheless, 2013 event will held in New Factory, Tampere. New Factory has been proven to be best place for events like this numerous times, to mention a few Akademy, MeeGo Summit FI 2011, Devaamo Summit 2012 and New Factory Open 2012.

Volunteers needed

We have formed a “core” team of around 10 people to take responsibilities about various tasks, but we need more volunteers to make this event the best possible. So far we have people from Technical University of Tampere, University of Tampere, Proakatemia, Hermia (Protomo) and local hackerspace 5w. Our local DIY promoting / accelerator organisation Devaamo (ry) has provided some tools such as mailing list and temporary server space for our domain until it will transferred to our sponsored server by Servergy. We have some sponsors already and we haven’t even started to sell packages yet. Ossoil (Jarkko Moilanen) will participate this event as organizer, taking main responsibility about space apps challenge. General management responsibility about the event is shared with Sointu Karjalainen (from Protomo). People from Proakatemia will manage the Start It Up! track and evening party.
